Why?
Because women over 50 years
are now the fastest growing
cohort in Australia facing housing stress
or homelessness.
Hidden Epidemic: one in three Australian women over 60 are living in permanent income poverty. This is a damning statistic for one of the world’s richest countries. Some are fortunate to live in secure housing (own home, with family or friends, renting or in social housing), but most are ‘living on the edge’. Their circumstances have unfortunately dealt them a bad hand including earning minimum wage, or difficulty getting a job due to ageism in the workforce, minimum or no superannuation, illness or injury, divorce or widowhood. Others may have been employed all their life, raised children and paid taxes, but lost their job. They typically struggle with paying rent, bills and food and some could be on the verge of homelessness.
We decided to help. Our mission is to make sure they don’t end up homeless by helping them turn their ideas and passion into a business. We believe their resilience and resourcefulness during journeys of hardship can be harnessed for income generation.
